Double Labor Day Buckets

Hope you had a time for some relaxation this weekend!  We had lots of time outside chilling and grilling, hence TWO buckets of compost fun…

  • Vidalia onion skin
  • Lemon
  • Arugula
  • Red Cabbage outer leaves & core
  • Eggshells
  • Green onion tops
  • Limes
  • Orange peel
  • More lemons

BOTTOM BUCKET: (clockwise top to bottom)

  • Bruised tops of heirloom tomatoes
  • Watermelon rind
  • Stem of black seedless grapes (tasty – look for them in your  market!)
  • Corn husks
  • More heirloom tomato
  • Black eyed pea pods (from our garden!)
  • Eggshell
  • More watermelon

What I made with all of that:


  • Local Grass-fed Beef Burgers with Sauteed Mushrooms, Arugula, Local Grass-fed Cheddar, and Garlic Dijon Mayo
  • Homemade BBQ sauce for Babyback Ribs
  • Moist Lemon Cake (LOTS of lemon flavor – I almost always tweak recipes & added double the lemon juice, plus added lemon extract & zest.  Added cream cheese to frosting, plus lemon & vanilla extract & fresh lemon juice )
  • Cheesy Corn Cakes (This was AMAZING!  Made it as is but added 1/4 cup sliced green onion tops and pan fried in butter.  Served with tomatoes in lieu of avocado.)
  • Easy Cabbage Slaw ( Just cabbage, lime juice, salt – that’s it and it’s GREAT!)
  • Heirloom Tomato Salad
